#TBT: PHAG Kitchen Redesign Comes Alive with Color

We’re all about having a little work done here at PHAG, particularly when an old design will no longer do for the new you. So for #TBT this week, we’re PHlashing back to a PHab PHAG makeover, by our own designer extraordinaire, Jason Crook.

Everyone loves a BIG reveal that’s as satisfying as it is…surprising. Yes, sometimes big things really do come in small packages, as with this kitchen makeover, Jason explains.

JC:  “This house and its materials were dated. The client and I agreed that the priority was to re-imagine this space, so the house would look and feel like a comfortable and contemporary city home – modern and fresh.”

With warm colors and judicious use of white, this pale kitchen blooms from drab to fab.

Since kitchens also frequently become a catch-all for clutter, organization is name of the game. However, if you’re going to try this at home, kids, resist utilitarian functionality in favor of creative storage solutions.  Once enclosed behind matching quad doors, this awkward pantry/coat closet is a cohesive and contained storage unit that doubles as a design feature.

A coat rack and wrought iron cookbook shelf hurt more than they help, as you can see in the “before” photo. Jason replaced them with metal stacking boxes. Organization that’s both PHun AND functional. The clever collection of cubes are anchored to each other with simple metal clips. These stackable units arrived with a gunmetal gray finish, but were painted and distressed to reflect the room’s new color scheme.

It’s hip to be square, after all, so Jason said so long to the original red flooring, and hello to a clean over-sized gray square tile. It’s a neutral base on which to build a simple, but thoughtful (and colorful!) design concept.

JC:  “My design aesthetic is a combination of many things, including what the client shares with me about their vision for using the space.  Together, we’re able to create something attractive that also reflects their daily life.  Your home should be a reflection of you.”
