The Danes are among the wealthiest and happiest people on the planet. No small feat during the long winter months in their part of the world. With up to 17 hours of darkness per day, sunlight is a precious commodity, in a place where temperatures hover around zero degrees.
Their secret it seems, is a tradition called hygga. Pronounced, “hoo-ga” the world roughly translates to “cozy.” However, the Danes take this idea of comfort to a new level when winter arrives, by proactively building it into their daily lives. It’s more than good cheer, it’s a lifestyle choice that includes everything from lighting and furniture to socializing with food and friends. Hygga, is an attitude that welcomes winter and the chances it brings for closer connection to ourselves, our homes, and each other.
To capture this Danish joie de vive in your own home begin at sundown by lighting up your home with the warm glow of winter by candlelight.
Resist the urge to pack away all of those holiday twinkle lights and festoon a window or two with them until Daylight savings time returns (in 9 weeks, but who’s counting?).
Invite friends over for a wine and cheese, or a comfort food slow cooker creation you’ve made especially for them. Set the table- be sure to use the good dinner and glassware!
Host a movie night and insist everyone arrives in flannel PJs. Drape armchairs and sofas with lush throws in colors that are as warm to the eye as they are to cold fingers and toes. Surrender to these moments. Celebrate them every single day like a ritual.
Here at PHAG we’re lighting candles and cozying up already because we’ve always been in support of creating a space that you love. We hereby embrace this oh-so-Danish idea of simple luxury. Resist the urge to wish away these short but meaningful days that are packed with chances to reflect and restore, mind, body and spirit.
Wishing you a warm and happy winter!
